Plastic-Free July Tips From The Bite Community
It’s no understatement when we say that plastic waste has become a global environmental concern — crisis, even. But we all have the power to make a difference and be a part of the solution. Plastic-Free July is the perfect time to challenge ourselves to reduce our plastic consumption and embrace more sustainable alternatives. At Bite, we believe that small changes have the power to make a big difference when adopted by many. We asked our customers what their favorite plastic-free tips were, and their responses did not disappoint. Read below for some inspiring tips from our community on how to go plastic-free across various aspects of daily life. Let's dive in and discover simple yet impactful changes we can make together.
1. Embrace Reusable Containers and Bags
"When shopping at the deli, bring a reusable container to cut down on plastic packaging.” -Lauren R.
Reusable containers are perfect for storing leftovers and pantry staples, replacing throwaway plastics. Additionally, opting for reusable cloth mesh bags for produce and bringing your own canvas bags to the supermarket reduces the need for single-use plastic bags. And when you're shopping for new products, opt for ones that come in glass containers that can be refilled, like our Toothpaste Bits (*wink* *wink*).
2. Choose Reusable Water Bottles and Utensils
"I fill up my reusable water bottle on the daily, and keep my reusable straw & spoons with me on the go to get a drink or even ice cream too!" -Anon
Ditching disposable plastic water bottles and single-use utensils is a significant step towards reducing plastic waste. Invest in a durable, refillable water bottle and carry reusable straws and utensils to enjoy drinks or meals sustainably on-the-go.
3. Swap Plastic for Bars
"I use shampoo, conditioner and body wash bars instead of bottles!" -Sandy S.
Bars, like our Carbon Capture Cleanser, reduce the plastic packaging needed for liquid soaps. Plus, we’ve found they usually last longer. You can find bars for everything nowadays: Shampoo + conditioner, dish soap, shave cream, lotion, the list goes on!
4. Repurpose and DIY
"I haven't ditched plastic completely, but the plastic I use I always find second and third uses for! For example, when I use a plastic bag I never throw it away, it always gets reused somehow. I believe reusing plastic is the next best thing compared to cutting it out of your life completely. Keeps it from ending up in landfills and saves you money!” -Ashton L.
"I wash takeout containers and reuse them at my favorite takeout places!" -Anon
Repurposing plastic products extends their lifespan and reduces waste. Get creative and find new uses for items you might have otherwise discarded. DIY projects utilizing waste materials can also be a fun way to reduce plastic consumption.
5. Support Local and Buy in Bulk
"I like to buy as much as I can from local businesses. The products are high quality, they produce less carbon emissions & usually have simple packaging or no packaging at all.” -Piper G.
"I try to buy groceries in bulk and packaged in glass, metal, or paperboard. This helps eliminate frequent single-use and unreusable plastics. Leaves the recycle bin almost plastic-free!" -Andrew C.
Buying locally and in bulk reduces the amount of single-use plastic packaging. Look for stores that offer package-free or refill stations for essential items like grains, spices, and cleaning supplies.
6. Eco-Friendly Laundry and Cleaning
"I use detergent sheets for my laundry to prevent using those bulky plastic containers that are harmful to all living things." -Anon
By swapping out plastic-laden laundry detergents for plastic-free alternatives and embracing the magic of wool balls instead of fabric softeners, you'll be tackling plastic waste head-on while keeping your laundry fresh and planet-friendly.
7. Refuse Single-Use Plastic
"Self discipline! My best tip is trying to limit the things you buy if you don't need them. Things you don't need create more waste in our lives and environment."
Saying no to single-use plastic and changing your consumption mindset can make a big difference in reducing plastic waste in your life.
